Getting Your Bike Out of Winter Storage

I just finally got my 2007 Honda VTX out of winter storage. I actually was lucky enough to store it up in a heated facility at the local Honda Motorcycle dealership. They charged .75 cents a day and I had access to it whenever I wanted. Put my all-weather cover on it, and actually had them do the 4000 miles oil change so one month into storage they got it up and running, changed the filters and double checked everything on the motor.

For those that bought a brand new Honda VTX, or any other motorcycle for that matter, should negotiate for a few free oil change/maintenance packages. User them at the 600 mile, and 4000 mile planned maintenance, especially if one of them is in the middle of the winter. You really don’t want to let it sit for too long with out running it, and following proper Motorcycle Winterizing you should have pulled out your battery and charged it every few weeks, and not let it sit to long on any one spot of the tire for the entire winter.

Getting it out of Winter Storage would hopefully have been easy and painless as it was for me. I spent 45 minutes cleaning it, using generally effective chrome scratch removal tips also apply to getting rid of those nasty brown spots. You will want to let it run for a while before taking it out, and when you have run it for a while out on the road, open that bad boy up. Push the motor a little kind of like a “break it in to make sure nothing funky is going on” with the motor, transmission etc.

One ting I have noticed with a lot of people who are just getting their bikes out of Winter Storage mode- is that they forget to ride it a little more cautiously than they should. Much like the many many car accidents that happen the first day of a big snow storm at the beginning of the winter season because people just forgot they have to drive differently: don’t let your first day back on the bike after a few month break be too unrestrained. Yes, I just recommended opening up the throttle but I don’t recommend up and riding with a large passenger, taking faster turns that normal and generally ignoring common sense because you are so excited to be back riding again.
